Feathers are traditionally used to help move the smoke from the smudge to people or around the circle.
Light smudge stick or loose leaves, wait a moment, hen blow out the flames. Fan embers lightly to keep smoldering (may need to be re-lit). Using the feather, fan the smoke to "wash" persons, property, or spaces.
